Oscar's selection process
The first Academy Awards were held in Hollywood in 1929.
Initially this award was limited to America. Later Europe and rest of the
countries also participated in this event. The first Oscar came to India in 1983.
Bhanu Athaiah won Oscar for Best Costume Design for 'Gandhi'.
Currently, Oscars are awarded in total of 24 categories.
Filmmakers can also apply for Oscars in individual categories - from Best
Picture, Best Actor, Screenplay to Best Documentary, Direction, Original Song.
The 'Best International Feature Film' is considered the most
prestigious category of the Oscars. Until 2020, the category was titled 'Best
Foreign Language Film'.
In order for a film or song to be nominated for an Oscar,
certain basic criteria must be met. Initially, the film has to be screened for
at least one week in commercial theaters in some important American cities -
Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Bay Area, Miami and Atlanta. Only then can they
apply for the Oscars. In the case of documentaries, however, the respective
film producers have to officially register the name of the film.
Also, the criteria for 'Best International Feature Film' is
slightly different. If you want to get nomination in this category, the name of
the film has to be officially registered by the government of the respective
country. Each country can send nominations for only one film. This year,
Gujarati film 'Chello Show' was officially sent to the Oscars from India.
After the application phase, several films are selected from the
list of all films based on their popularity by the Academy Awards authorities.
But, the short list is also too long. This year there were a total of 301 films
in the shortlist.
And the best film is selected through voting. A total of 10,000
people vote in this Oscar election. They are mainly important personalities
associated with the film industry of different countries. This list includes
famous directors, writers and actors. Even some of the previous Oscar winners
participate in the selection.
These voters are divided into distinct categories according to
occupation. Directors have a separate category, voting only for the Best
Director award and actors have a separate category, they vote only for Best
Actor.
In this Oscar selection process have a traditional ballot paper
system. Besides, online voting is also available. Since the election is not
based on the votes of one person in any one country, it is assumed to be
neutral.
